Sugar House was established in 1853, six years after Latter Day Saint settlers came to the region. The name comes from the sugar beet test factory that was established in a blacksmith shop. The wife of Salt Lake City’s mayor at the time made the suggestion.
Sugar House Prison was Utah’s first state correctional institution. It was located in Sugar House during the 19th and early 20th century before being relocated. Today, Sugar House is the site of Westminster College. The Sugar House Center shopping facility was completed in 1990, bringing in large national chains for the first time.
